Portage Lakes
Remote Adventures
For the more adventuresome, Woman River Camp has 12 amazing portage lakes. Portage lengths vary greatly in length and level of difficulty. Our easiest accessed lakes are a simple drive down the road, back up to the boat. load and go. Other great portage lakes are accessed by boating up the Woman River docking then hiking a trail to the remote lake. Where the boat is waiting with a motor ready to go. Portages may be reserved prior to your arrival. Although, we do like everyone to have a chance at a portage trip so the number of trips you can go on may be limited.
Corless Lake – is a remote portage, accessed via Big Bear Lake. A scenic 20-25 minute (15 km / 9.25 mi.) boat ride from camp will have you at the well marked trail head. The trail is 2 km (1.25 mi) long and easy walking, as it utilizes part of an abandoned logging road for part of the way. Be quiet and alert to maximize your chance to see some of the fantastic wildlife which also utilizes the trail and clear cut. The lake itself, is a little gem, tea stained in colour, one creek flowing in and out, and a maximum depth of 20ft. Approximately 1.5 Km long, 6.96 Km of shoreline, and 104.6 ha (258.5 acres) of area. Walleye action is usually fast with most fish between 14-18″wtih the occasional 20+ fish. Lot’s of 100 fish days. Use spinner rigs with bottom bouncers to locate the Walleye and then jig’em up. Favourite colours are orange and chartreuse. The lake produces trophy class Northern Pike with flashy Rapala Husky Jerks, Mepps spinners and spoons. Our 16′ boat fishes 3 comfortably but 4 in a pinch. It is the only boat on the lake! Corless is a great lake for all ages. A favourite for bringing young children. Possession limits are in accordance with your fishing license and Woman River Camp Conservation Policy.
Fredart – a medium size lake east of Snakeweed. The lake has over 13.8 Km of shoreline and covers approximately 207.6 ha (512.9 acres). Presently, this lake is not available. Not sure what fish species are in the lake.
Found Lake – is presently no available.
Gerry Lake – is located 10 kilometers (6.25 mi) south of camp. Just off South Bay road. You will take your personal vehicle to the portage trail. The trail is a very short walk, under 5 minutes. Gerry is a small lake with tea stained water and the deepest hole is around 35 ft. The lake has approximately 7.8Km of shoreline and covers 87.2 ha (215.4 acres) A great lake for Northern Pike and Walleye. Jig the walleye or cast crankbaits. Northern Pike like lures with some vibration due to the stained water. Trophy size Northern Pikefish are commonly caught. A 16′ boat will keep 3-4 fishermen or 3 fishermen and a dog, comfortable all day. Woman River Camp has the only boat on the lake! Gerry Lake is CATCH & RELEASE ONLY for all species.
Mukukee Lake – is approximately 31Km (19 mi) further north on South Bay road. You would take your own vehicle to the lake. There is a short walk of less than 50 m (55yds) and then the lake is accessed via a small creek. This portage was recently opened in 2008. It is a very beautiful lake, picturesque shoreline and has dark water. There is access to another smaller lake. We use a 14 ft. boat on the lake. Perfect for two anglers looking for some adventure. Mukukee Lake is a catch and release lake. Limited to 40 fishermen a year.
Narrow Lake – is located approximately 35 Km (22 mi) from camp by boat. A short walk I do with a 15Hp motor on my shoulder in 6 minutes. Narrow is a very different looking lake compared to the other portage lakes. It is long and narrow as its name suggests. The water is super stained which makes it a walleye factory. The lake has some great structure and some very deep holes. I find the lake fishes best later in the afternoon and evening. A little chop sure turns the fish on! Definitely my favourite portage lake for walleye fishing. Jig fishing is my chosen technique but I have been out fished with guests using a form of Lindy rigs. Although not superb Northern Pike action, the lake has produced some of the biggest trophy fish caught at Woman River Camp. The Northern Pike like big baits. Woman River Camp has a 16′ boat to fish three comfortably and 4 if just jigging. Possession limits on Narrow Lake are Conservation limits only and in accordance with our Woman River Camp’s Conservation Policy.
Nelson Lake - portage is approximately 40-45 minutes (22Km/13mi) from camp by boat. On Little Woman Lake. The trail is beautiful and rugged but in good shape. It is about 2.5 Km (1.5 miles) long and takes about 45 minutes to hike. This is the remotest portage lake we access by foot. The lake has about 6.89 Km of shoreline and covers over 73.6ha (181.9 acres). The lake is a terrific Northern Pike lake with some super fast action and does produce trophy fish. Deep dark water, the lake cries for baits with good vibration and bright colours. This is a great lake for those who like to cast or anyone who wishes to have that feeling of complete remoteness. Very scenic. Woman River Camp has the only boat on the lake. It is 14′ in length, fishes 2 comfortably or three maximum. Possession limits are in accordance to your fishing license and Woman River Camp Conservation Policy.
No Name Lake #1 – is located approximately 11Km (6.75mi) further north on South Bay road. You would take your own vehicle to the lake. A short walk less than 200m (210yds) to the boat from the road. This was a new lake in 2007 and has seen very limited pressure. Initial reports inform us there are Northern Pike present in good numbers with some larger fish. I have not been on the lake. A 14′ boat is used and will fish 2-3 anglers. A nice lake to explore! Possession limits are Conservation Limits and in accordance with Woman River Camp’s Conservation Policy. Limited to 50 anglers per year.
Two Whistle Lake - is located approximately 19Km (12mi) from camp further north on South Bay road. This little lake is on the opposite side of Confederation Lake. The 14′ boat is right beside the road and very easily accessed. The lake is loaded with Northern Pike. A great lake to tear up some tackle with a lot of action. The boat can also be carried across the road and put into Confederation Lake. Which contains an excellent population of Lake Trout & Trophy Northern Pike. Possession limits are in accordance to your fishing license and Woman River Camp’s Conservation Policy. Limited to 36 anglers a year.
Snakeweed Lake – our easiest drive-to portage, located about 4 Km (2.5 mi) south of camp. Right beside South Bay Road. You will drive your personal vehicle to the lake. Unload your gear at the boat then park your vehicle on the opposite side of the road. The lake has over 24.6 km of shoreline and its area covers more than 291.6ha (720.1 acres) The lake produces some huge Walleye and Northern Pike as well as it puts out the numbers. It is a beautiful lake with a very picturesque shoreline and waterfalls in and out. With the right water conditions, you can travel under the road and fish the large bay on the other side. The lake has plenty of bays, weeds, points and dropoffs for all fishing techniques. Basically an extension of the Woman River Chain. A terrific lake for all ages. Especially good for those with limited mobility. Woman River Camp has one 16′ boat on the lake. It comfortably fishes 3 and possibly 4. Possession limits are in accordance to your fishing license and Woman River Camp’s Conservation Policy.
Spot Lake – is a beautiful little lake shaped like a donut with crystal clear water and lots of structure. Access to the trail is also off Big Bear Lake. Travel time is about 30 minutes (19 Km / 12 mi.) from camp to the beginning of the trail. A short hike through the old forest will take the average person about 15minutes (500m - 1/4mi). The lake contains Walleye, Northern Pike and Smallmouth Bass. When y0ur arm is tired of reeling in the Walleye, cast the structure for Smallmouth Bass or troll for the Trophy Northern Pike. Main baits are 1/4oz jigs in white, pink, and orange. When the Smallmouth are hitting surface lures, there is no better action! Otherwise, a Blue Fox #3 silver blade inline spinner produces too. The Northern Pike are huge in this lake. They will take just about anything you throw! Stick with natural colour. I like white to go along with the large sucker population they feed on. The boat is a 16′ boat and will fish 3 and maybe 4 with limited casting. This lake is great for all ages and one of my favourites in the spring and fall for Trophy Pike! Fishing on Spot Lake is CATCH & RELEASE ONLY, for all species.
